Greetings,
First off, I would like to take this time to reflect on all those that gave the ultimate sacrifice to this country. This is to those that didn’t make it back home.
Now I would like to ask you this, what is Memorial Day? I always like to ask this every year. As people take this day to remember in various different ways. Some people like to have a bbq, while others will go to the lake and celebrate by fishing, swimming, and boating. Some will even go and watch a ceremony somewhere, but what is it?
So, in short Memorial Day is a day to remember those that took that ultimate sacrifice for our beautiful country and died in Military Service. It was originated following the Civil War, but became an official Federal Holiday in 1971. In the late 1860’s, small towns across America started doing tributes every year in the spring time by decorating fallen soldiers graves and reciting prayers.
On May 5th, 1868, General John A. Logan, the leader of an organization for Northern Civil War Veterans, called for a nationwide day of Remembrance. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed.
For decades, Memorial Day continued to be on May 30th, the date General Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. However, in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees and also declaring it as a Federal Holiday. This went into effect in 1971.
People across the U.S. celebrate Memorial Day by holding Parades, visiting cemeteries and memorials. Some people even wear a red poppy in remembrance which started with a WW1 Poem.
So, with that being said I would just like to say thank you to those that made the ultimate sacrifice. I will leave this post with a song I listen to ever year:
